Jacob Gobble Takes the Helm at Loretto High School, Aiming to Sustain a Winning Tradition

The former Collinwood coach returns to lead a young squad, inheriting lofty expectations after Greg Tipps' departure.

Jacob Gobble, a former Collinwood boys basketball coach, has been named the new head coach at Loretto High School, stepping into the role after a year away from the sidelines.

Gobble’s departure from Collinwood came after six seasons that produced a culture of competitiveness and community engagement, a period he left behind to attend to personal matters, including the loss of his mother to cancer, his marriage, and the birth of his child.

A Legacy to Uphold

Greg Tipps, who guided the Loretto boys to six sectional appearances, four state tournament berths and two state titles, recently moved on to a women’s basketball position at UT Southern, leaving a high bar for his successor.

Gobble acknowledges the weight of those expectations, noting that the program’s recent success sets a standard he intends to meet while charting his own path.

The upcoming roster will be youthful, featuring only two seniors, but Gobble believes the underclassmen possess the talent and hunger to remain competitive in a tough district.

His primary goal is to keep the ambition high, aiming to return the team to the state tournament, a stage he refers to as the Glass House.

Supporting Gobble in this endeavor are assistant coaches Mason Tidwell, Cam Andrews and Wyatt Shelton, each bringing fresh perspectives to the program’s development.

The transition also reflects broader changes in the region’s basketball landscape, with Loretto’s long‑standing rivalry against Collinwood now shifting from a shared history to a new chapter of mentorship and mutual respect.
