A New Era for Lexington Football
Jacob Owens was unanimously approved as the new head football coach at Lexington High School on July 22, stepping into the role left vacant by the sudden passing of Andrew Saris on June 30.
Owens, a Lexington native who once wore the Minutemen jersey as a player, climbed the coaching ladder from a 2018 quarterbacks‑coach stint at Mansfield Senior to offensive coordinator at Lexington in 2023, a position he held for three seasons.
His tenure included a memorable run to the Division III state championship game with the Tygers, where they finished as runners‑up, and a conference championship last year that propelled the Minutemen to a 39.5‑point average per game.
The team made the playoffs for the second straight year before bowing out in the regional quarterfinals to Toledo Central Catholic, a testament to the program’s resilience under Owens’ guidance.
Honoring the Past, Building the Future
Speaking about his new responsibilities, Owens said he is dedicating the upcoming season to Saris, emphasizing that his focus is on the development and success of his players both on and off the field.
He highlighted the importance of building relationships with each athlete, noting that caring for them beyond football is the foundation of lasting achievement.
The Minutemen open the season on August 21 at Ontario, a matchup that will serve as the first test of Owens’ philosophy in action.
