Jahmai Mashack Returns to Knoxville to Fight Food Insecurity

Former UT star volunteers with Second Harvest, linking his basketball journey to community outreach

Jahmai Mashack, a former University of Tennessee basketball standout who now wears a Memphis Grizzlies jersey on a two‑way contract, was back in Knoxville this past August, not for a game but to lend a hand at the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Hope Takes Root

He spent the morning sorting boxes, loading trucks and even stepping onto a partner farm to see the produce he was helping to move, getting a firsthand look at the “Harvesting Hope” initiative that links dozens of farms across 18 counties to families facing hunger.

The experience struck a chord with Mashack, who grew up watching his mother, Meika Mashack, organize community meals on Christmas morning, a tradition that taught him the value of giving without fanfare.

During his three years as a Volunteer, he helped lead the team to notable victories, earned a draft selection by the Houston Rockets in 2025 and now balances NBA ambitions with a commitment to the Grizzlies and the Knoxville community.

For Mashack, the act of handing a bag of fresh vegetables to a smiling child is more rewarding than any highlight reel, and he hopes his visibility can inspire both teammates and fans to look beyond the court and into the neighborhoods that shaped them.
