Furman University has announced that Jake Garcia will take the helm as the Paladins’ starting quarterback for the upcoming 2024 season, a move that signals a fresh direction for the program’s offense.
Garcia arrives after two seasons that included a stint at Michigan and a recent run at East Carolina, where he logged 1,426 passing yards and eight touchdowns in 2024. His collegiate résumé also features a strong showing at Michigan, where he contributed to a competitive quarterback group before transferring to East Carolina.
Garcia’s Arrival Signals a Shift in Offensive Strategy
Head coach Clay Hendrix highlighted Garcia’s blend of talent, leadership and work ethic, noting that the quarterback’s reputation precedes him and has already earned the respect of teammates and staff alike.
The quarterback room has transformed from a crowded camp of four candidates into a more cohesive unit, with Garcia’s addition marking a pivotal change in the team’s offensive outlook.
Joining Garcia are Conner Ackerley, who transferred in January after throwing for 2,999 yards and 30 touchdowns at Western New Mexico, and rising sophomore Trey Smith, a Georgia high‑school standout who led his team to a 12‑2 record and a state semifinal appearance.
Nehuel Garcia, a fourth‑year player praised for his basketball‑style athleticism and consistent camp performances, also returns to the fold, while depth pieces Ben Milliken and Logan Rogers are expected to provide additional support.
Coach Hendrix expressed confidence that the newly skilled quarterback group will translate into better on‑field execution, and the coaching staff believes the unit’s chemistry could drive the Paladins to a stronger season overall.
