A New Chapter for the Volunteers
Jalen Washington, a forward who spent the last two seasons at Vanderbilt, has officially joined the Tennessee Volunteers basketball program, marking the latest addition to a transfer class that ranks among the nation’s most formidable.
Coach Rick Barnes praised Washington’s character, humility and work ethic, describing him as a first‑class young man who embodies the values of the program.
Washington arrives after a career‑high season at Vanderbilt in which he averaged 8.9 points and 5.6 rebounds while shooting 56.3 percent from the field and 74.1 percent on free throws. He also led the Commodores in blocks (46) and ranked second in offensive rebounds (72).
His defensive versatility was on display in three matchups against Tennessee last season, where he posted a season‑high 10 rebounds and six blocks in the opening game of a 69‑65 victory.
The transfer’s journey includes a stint at North Carolina, where he earned Defensive Player of the Year honors as a junior and amassed 52 blocks over 96 career appearances. Prior to college, Washington was a four‑star recruit from the high school ranks, earning all‑state and all‑conference accolades.
Now at Tennessee, Washington is expected to fortify the low‑post and provide depth on defense as the Volunteers aim to contend for a national title. His addition brings the ninth ranked transfer in the country and the fourth post player added from the portal this offseason.
The move follows a knee injury that sidelined him during his senior year of high school, but the fifth‑year eligibility he secured after graduating from Vanderbilt has positioned him to make an immediate impact for the Volunteers.
