Mississippi Delta Community College announced this week that Jamar McKnight has been appointed head coach of the Trojans men’s basketball program, effective June 8.
A Homecoming for a Conference Legend
McKnight, a Mississippi native who once dazzled as a player in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges, returns to the conference not only as a coach but as the only current MACCC head men’s basketball coach who previously competed as a student‑athlete in the league.
From Player to Coach
His playing résumé includes a standout sophomore season at Northwest Mississippi Community College where he averaged 18.5 points per game, followed by a senior year at Clemson University with 13.5 points and five rebounds per game.
A Journey Across the Globe
After a professional stint that took him across Europe and the Middle East, McKnight transitioned into coaching, most recently serving as an assistant under Byron Starks at Baton Rouge Community College.
A Scholar on the Sidelines
Beyond the hardwood, McKnight holds a sociology instructor position at Southern University A&M and conducts research on how athletic participation influences families and personal development.
A Vision for the Future
In his first public remarks, McKnight expressed gratitude for the opportunity, emphasizing that he wants to build a program rooted in discipline, accountability and holistic player development.
He outlined a vision that blends competitive ambition with academic support, promising that each student‑athlete will be prepared for success both on the court and in life after college.
Community Roots
McKnight’s ties to the region run deep; he previously led the boys’ basketball program at Southern University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge to a state‑ranking No. 1 and a quarterfinal appearance in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association.
Looking Ahead
The college’s athletic director praised McKnight’s blend of playing experience, coaching acumen and community ties, noting that his appointment signals a new era of stability and growth for the Trojans. Fans and alumni alike are eager to see how his philosophy will translate into on‑court performance and how the program will engage with the broader Mississippi Delta community.
