Jamayne Potts Joins Alaska Fairbanks Coaching Staff
The University of Alaska Fairbanks has announced the appointment of Jamayne Potts as its newest assistant coach for the men’s basketball team, a move that underscores the program’s intent to bolster its roster with seasoned leadership.
Potts arrives after a 20‑year odyssey through the coaching ranks, spanning collegiate, high school and club environments, and including a six‑year tenure as head coach at Warner Pacific University where he guided the team to an 18‑10 record and a 15‑7 mark in conference play during the 2022‑23 season.
A Proven Record at Warner Pacific
During his stint at Warner Pacific, Potts also served as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance, a role in which he oversaw eligibility standards and ensured that student‑athletes met academic and regulatory requirements.
His earlier stops include an assistant position at Lake Forest College, where the team reached the Midwest Conference semifinals, and a formative period at Caltech University, where he began his collegiate coaching career.
Player Development and Academic Leadership
Potts’s reputation as a developer of talent is reinforced by the trajectory of several protégés who have ascended to Division I competition, among them Bryce Young, the Heisman Trophy‑winning quarterback whose early mentorship under Potts is often cited in player development circles.
The coach’s accolades include a 2017 Coach of the Year award from Burbank High School in California, where he led his squad to notable tournament runs and earned recognition for both athletic and academic excellence.
Beyond the win‑loss column, Potts holds an MBA from the University of the People and a bachelor’s degree in business management from Bethany University, complemented by an associate degree in physical education from Bakersfield College, credentials that reflect his commitment to holistic player growth.
