Jamelle Elliott, a cornerstone of the University of Connecticut women's basketball program for more than two decades, announced this week that she will step down from her roles as associate athletic director and assistant coach to explore opportunities beyond the university. Her departure marks the end of a tenure that spanned 22 seasons, encompassing both her playing years and a distinguished coaching career.
A Legacy of Championships
Elliott’s impact is woven into the fabric of UConn’s rise to national prominence. As a player from 1992 to 1995 she amassed 1,387 points and 1,054 rebounds, helping the Huskies capture their first national title in 1995 and six Big East championships. She later returned to the program as an assistant, contributing to six additional national championships during her 11‑year stint on Geno Auriemma’s staff.
Geno Auriemma, the head coach who has guided the Huskies for three decades, praised Elliott’s dedication and the indelible mark she has left on the program. "Jamelle’s commitment to UConn has been unwavering," Auriemma said in a statement, "and her influence will be felt long after she departs."
Elliott’s career trajectory reflects a seamless transition from player to coach to administrator. After completing her playing career, she joined Auriemma’s staff two years later, spent a decade as an assistant, then stepped away to lead the women’s program at Cincinnati before returning to Storrs in 2018 as the Associate Athletic Director for the National C Club. She briefly served as an interim assistant during the 2019‑20 season before being named a permanent assistant later that offseason.
Looking Ahead
UConn will now embark on a national search to fill the vacant assistant coach position. The remainder of the coaching staff remains intact, featuring associate head coach Chris Dailey and non‑recruiting assistant Tonya Cardoza, both of whom continue to play pivotal roles in the program’s ongoing success.
