Jamelle Elliott, who has served as an assistant coach for the University of Connecticut women’s basketball program for the past 18 seasons, announced this week that she will step down to explore new opportunities beyond the sport.
A distinguished career
Her tenure spans two distinct periods — 1998 to 2009 and a recent stretch from 2020 through the 2025‑26 campaign — during which the Huskies captured six national titles and amassed 31 conference championships, a testament to the program’s sustained excellence.
A UConn alumna from 1992 to 1996, she was a cornerstone player on teams that posted a 117‑18 record, secured six Big East crowns, and claimed the school’s first national championship in 1995; she remains second in school history for career points and rebounds.
After a brief interlude as head coach at the University of Cincinnati from 2009 to 2013, Elliott returned to Storrs in 2018 as Associate Athletic Director for The National C Club before resuming coaching duties in 2020, where she helped shape the frontcourt development of the current roster.
Program leadership
University of Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma praised Elliott’s multifaceted contributions, noting that her impact as a player, coach, and mentor has been integral to the program’s identity and that the search for her successor will be guided by the standards she set.
UConn has launched a national search for Elliott’s replacement, aiming to appoint a leader who can continue the winning tradition while honoring the culture of excellence she helped cultivate.
