Georgia Southwestern State University has named James Frey as its new head coach for the women's basketball team, ushering in a new chapter for the Lady Hurricanes. The appointment was confirmed this week, highlighting the university's commitment to elevating its program through experienced leadership.
A Coach With a Proven Track Record
Frey arrives with more than three-and-a-half decades of collegiate coaching experience, including stints as an associate head coach at New Mexico State University and the College of Coastal Georgia. His career is marked by a relentless focus on developing both athletic talent and academic achievement.
During his 11 seasons at South Georgia Technical College, Frey compiled a 306‑61 record, captured multiple championships and earned NJCAA Region 17 Coach of the Year honors seven times. His final season there ended with a 29‑1 record and a No. 1 national ranking, underscoring his ability to build championship cultures.
Before joining Georgia Southwestern, Frey contributed to the University of Memphis and New Mexico State staffs, where he helped guide the Aggies to a Women’s National Invitation Tournament bid in the 2024‑25 season. He also worked closely with guard Molly Kaiser, who earned Conference USA Player of the Year honors, the program’s first since 2019.
Reflecting on his new role, Frey expressed excitement about returning to Americus and building a winning program from the ground up. "I’m thrilled to be back in this community and eager to bring my experience to the Lady Hurricanes," he said in a statement released by the university.
