James Frey, a coach with 35 years of collegiate experience, has been appointed head women's basketball coach at Georgia Southwestern State University, the school announced this week.
His career includes a long tenure as associate head coach at New Mexico State University, an assistant role at the University of Memphis, and 21 seasons at the College of Coastal Georgia where he helped shape recruiting pipelines and player development.
A championship pedigree
At South Georgia Technical College he led the Lady Jets to eight NJCAA Region 17 and Southeast District championships, highlighted by a 29‑1 season that secured the program a No. 1 national ranking and two appearances in the NJCAA Sweet 16.
His defensive philosophy has produced 12 NJCAA All‑Americans, and he was named WBCA Two‑Year College National Coach of the Year in 2021 and WER National Coach of the Year in 2023.
Frey will begin his duties at GSW immediately and is scheduled for a formal introduction on July 31, marking the start of a new era for the Lady Hurricanes.
