James Sands grew up in the leafy suburbs of Rye, New York, where soccer was more than a pastime — it was a family tradition. His twin brother, Will Sands, shared the same early passion, and together they chased their dreams on local fields.
The Sands twins caught the eye of the New York Soccer Club before entering the academy system of New York City FC in 2015, a move that set the stage for Sands' rapid ascent.
At just 16, Sands made history as the club’s first‑ever Homegrown Player, a milestone that signaled the rise of a local product on the national stage.
His MLS debut arrived in September 2017 against the Colorado Rapids, and he quickly became a fixture in the midfield, helping NYCFC capture the 2021 MLS Cup and earning Young Player of the Year honors.
That same year he earned a call‑up to the United States Men’s National Team, featuring in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final where the U.S. edged Mexico 1‑0.
European Adventure
A loan spell at Scottish giants Rangers F.C. in January 2022 saw Sands rack up 41 appearances and lift the 2022 Scottish Cup, while also experiencing European competition in the UEFA Europa League and Champions League.
After his stint in Scotland, he moved on loan to German Bundesliga side FC St. Pauli, continuing to showcase his versatility in a new tactical environment.
Off the pitch, Sands remains tied to his roots, having attended the prestigious Brunswick School and maintaining strong ties to Rye, where he is celebrated as one of the city’s most successful athletes.
From the streets of Rye to the pitches of Scotland and Germany, James Sands exemplifies the modern American player who can compete at the highest levels while staying grounded in his hometown values.
