Jamestown’s Ambitious Revamp of North Point Mall
The developer Jamestown is poised to transform the aging North Point Mall in Alpharetta into a sprawling mixed‑use complex that could become a new sports and entertainment anchor for metro Atlanta.
At the heart of the plan is a distinctive arena shaped like a Corten‑steel hockey puck, designed to host concerts, exhibitions and, potentially, NHL games. Adjacent to the arena, a 4,000‑seat music hall and roughly 700 hotel rooms would provide lodging for visitors drawn by regional events.
The project also calls for nearly 1,400 rental apartments, expansive green spaces, and a dedicated MARTA Bus Rapid Transit corridor that would cross over Georgia Highway 400, improving pedestrian access to the site.
A Critical Vote Looms
Alpharetta’s City Council is set to cast the final vote on the redevelopment on August 24, a decision that will determine whether the vision moves forward. The planning commission had previously approved the scheme by a 4‑3 margin, with dissenters arguing that the city should prioritize securing an NHL franchise before committing to the design.
The proposal now faces competition from a rival $3 billion development in Forsyth County, dubbed The Gathering at South Forsyth, which also hinges on attracting an NHL team. Both projects aim to rival the Braves‑anchored Battery Atlanta in Cobb County and capture the spending power of a metro area that exceeds 1.5 million residents.
Jamestown announced its involvement in the North Point Mall revamp in February, but the timeline remains contingent on municipal approvals and the successful recruitment of an NHL franchise.
Regional Implications
If realized, the Alpharetta complex would join a growing cluster of sports‑centric developments across the Atlanta metro region, reinforcing the area’s bid to become a hub for professional hockey and large‑scale entertainment.
