A New Era for Alton Basketball
Alton High School announced this week that JaQuail Townser, a 2012 graduate and former Redbirds point guard, will take over as head coach of the boys basketball program, succeeding Dylan Dudley, who left to lead the men’s team at Illinois College.
Townser, who previously served as an assistant under Dudley, outlined a vision built around discipline, accountability, toughness and togetherness, aiming to forge a championship culture that extends beyond the hardwood.
A central pillar of his approach is academic excellence; the coach has made clear that strong classroom performance is non‑negotiable, insisting that student‑athletes represent the school with integrity in both arenas.
His playing days at Alton High were marked by standout statistics — averaging 17 points, seven assists, five rebounds and two steals per game in his senior season — and he capped that run with a regional title, later earning first‑team All‑Region honors at Southwestern Illinois College before transferring to Jacksonville State University, where he contributed 8.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists over 56 NCAA appearances.
Townser’s return also brings familiarity with local mentors, including former head coaches Layne Bennett and William Gordon, whose guidance helped shape his development, and he hopes to continue that legacy while mentoring the next generation of Redbirds.
The program will prioritize community service and personal growth, seeking to develop young men who excel on the court, in the classroom and in the broader Alton community.
