Jason Simmons Returns to Purdue Football as Assistant General Manager

After stints at central Indiana high schools and a brief role at Miami (Ohio), Simmons rejoins the Boilermakers under GM Brandon Lee

A Strategic Homecoming for Purdue

Jason Simmons is set to rejoin the Purdue football program as its assistant general manager, a position he previously filled during a brief stint as an offensive analyst and interim offensive coordinator.

Simmons first arrived at Purdue after a decade of coaching in central Indiana, where he honed his leadership at programs such as Ben Davis, Noblesville and Hamilton Heights. His work with running backs at Miami (Ohio) for a single season added a regional perspective before he returned to West Lafayette.

He will replace Ethan Baxter, who departed for a similar role at Appalachian State, and will report directly to general manager Brandon Lee. The move is seen as a continuation of the offensive restructuring that head coach Ryan Walters has been overseeing.

Simmons’ return also brings Barry Odom, a veteran defensive mind, back into the fold as he collaborates with Walters on a comprehensive staff overhaul. The collaboration is expected to tighten coordination between the analytics department and the on‑field schemes.

University officials highlighted the strategic timing of the hire, noting that Simmons’ experience in both high‑school coaching and college administration equips him to bridge gaps between talent evaluation and game planning. His appointment underscores Purdue’s commitment to building a cohesive football operation.

The Boilermakers hope that Simmons’ familiarity with Indiana’s recruiting landscape will boost their competitiveness in the Big Ten, especially as they aim to rebound from a challenging recent season.
