After eleven seasons steering the Bloomington North Cougars, veteran coach Jason Speer announced his retirement on Tuesday, bringing an end to a tenure that blended on‑court success with a deep commitment to his school and community.
Speer, who also relinquished his role as assistant athletic director, will continue teaching at North, a decision that allows him to focus on family and the next chapter of his life.
Championships and Memorable Moments
Under Speer’s guidance the Cougars captured two sectional titles and a regional championship, moments highlighted by dramatic victories that etched his name into the program’s recent history.
His son, Rex Speer, is set to join the Notre Dame men’s basketball program as a student manager, linking the family’s basketball legacy to a new arena.
In a heartfelt statement, Speer expressed gratitude for the “tremendous gift” of coaching, noting that the experience has been as rewarding off the court as it has been on.
Looking Ahead
The school will immediately begin the search for a successor, with assistant coaches slated to oversee summer workouts while the transition unfolds.
Returning talent includes seniors Derrick Cross and Levi Lindeman, who are expected to rank among the state’s top players next season.
Speer’s coaching journey began in Bedford before he moved to Columbus North, where he amassed a 115‑48 record over seven seasons, a résumé that caught the attention of Bloomington North’s leadership.
He succeeded Andy Hodson, who had stepped down in 2017, and together they served under Tom McKinney from 2001 to 2004, building a network that spans two decades of Indiana basketball.
The upcoming replacement will inherit a program poised for continued competitiveness, a testament to Speer’s lasting impact on the school’s culture and athletic identity.
