Jason Wachs, a 22‑year‑old outfielder who spent two seasons at Tulane University, announced his commitment to Louisiana State University earlier this week, ending a recruiting battle that also involved the University of Tennessee and several other programs.
During his sophomore year with the Green Wave, Wachs batted .327, hit nine home runs and drove in 54 runs, earning a reputation as a reliable middle‑of‑order threat. He also earned a spot on the American All‑Freshman team in 2025 after posting a .335 average with two homers and 25 RBIs.
The Decision and Its Implications
The Vols are gearing up for a major overhaul of their outfield. Last season they lost Reese Chapman to graduation, and they may also see Garrett Wright depart for the MLB Draft. In addition, veterans Jay Abernathy and Nate Eisfelder have entered the transfer portal, leaving a sizeable production gap.
Tennessee’s coaching staff has identified replacing that collective output as a top priority. While Blaine Brown remains a key piece, the team still needs to fill the void left by the departing players.
Wachs’s versatility allows him to patrol both right field and center field, giving the Vols a potential option if they decide to pursue a transfer or if the MLB Draft reshapes their roster.
The move underscores the growing influence of the transfer portal in college baseball, as programs increasingly rely on experienced transfers to plug holes left by graduation and professional signings.
