A new chapter for Javon Bennett
Javon Bennett, the former Dayton Flyers point guard, announced his commitment to Gonzaga for a fifth year of college basketball. The move comes after a legal battle that reshaped the NCAA's eligibility framework, allowing athletes to extend their collegiate careers up to five seasons within a five‑year window.
Bennett was one of fifteen Ohio college players who sued the NCAA in June 2025 over an age‑based eligibility model. Hamilton County Judge Christopher Wagner issued a preliminary injunction in July 2025, siding with the plaintiffs and prompting the NCAA to continue contesting the decision while similar cases unfolded across the country.
At Dayton, Bennett emerged as the team's leading scorer, averaging 15.8 points per game last season and earning first‑team Atlantic 10 honors. He finished his Flyers career with 1,238 points, ranking 33rd in school history and standing alone as the only player under six feet to reach the 1,000‑point milestone for the program.
Gonzaga lost its starting point guard, Mario Saint‑Supery, in July 2025, creating an immediate need for a seasoned floor general. Bennett is expected to step into that role, bringing his scoring prowess and veteran leadership to a Bulldogs squad that finished the 2024‑25 season with a 31‑4 record and a streak of NCAA tournament appearances dating back to 1999.
Beyond college, Bennett has said he plans to pursue professional basketball in Spain after completing his fifth season at Gonzaga. He joins a growing list of recent Dayton graduates who have transferred to other programs, including Zimi Nwokeji (Jacksonville), Malachi Smith (Connecticut), Koby Brea (Kentucky) and Kobe Elvis (Oklahoma).
