Jay Bilas, a longtime ESPN basketball analyst, is gearing up for the American Century Championship, a celebrity tournament that will unfold July 10‑12 at Edgewood Tahoe in Nevada and stream on NBC and Peacock.
The event, backed by American Century Investments, offers a $750,000 prize pool, with $150,000 earmarked for the first‑place finisher, and has already funneled more than $8 million to charitable causes.
A multi‑sport childhood
Growing up, Bilas chased baseball and basketball on the high school fields, while also dreaming of a career in the NFL as a tight end. His athletic versatility caught the eye of talent scouts who had long seen basketball players transition to professional football.
In the 1980s, the NFL experimented with athletes from other sports, most famously hurdler Renaldo Nehemiah, who briefly played wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers.
The unexpected call
Years later, a call from Bobby Beathard, then a senior executive with the Washington Redskins, offered Bilas a spot at the team’s training camp. The invitation was genuine, but Bilas ultimately declined, opting instead to focus on his burgeoning basketball career.
Reflecting on the episode, Bilas notes that the NFL tryout was a fleeting moment that underscored the fluid pathways athletes can take, but his passion for basketball guided his professional trajectory.
Beyond personal ambition, the American Century Championship blends competition with philanthropy, channeling prize money and tournament proceeds into local and national nonprofits, reinforcing the event’s broader social impact.
