Jay Butler’s Rapid Overhaul Revives Winston‑Salem State Basketball

In just 90 days the new coach has assembled a deep roster and aims to restore the C.E. Gaines Center’s legacy.

A New Era for WSSU Basketball

Winston‑Salem State’s men’s basketball program has entered a whirlwind transformation. In roughly 90 days, head coach Jay Butler has signed 43 prospects, reshaping the roster and setting the stage for a competitive future.

The Rams finished the previous season with a modest 7‑19 overall record and a 2‑14 mark in CIAA play, a stark contrast to the program’s historic standards.

Butler brings more than two decades of college coaching experience, a 372‑239 career record, and eight NCAA Division II Tournament appearances. He earned CIAA Coach of the Year honors three times and previously played under legendary mentor Dave Robbins at Virginia Union.

The incoming class features a mix of size and skill. Antonio Williams, a 6‑foot‑7 forward from Three Rivers Community College, joins David Solomon III, a 6‑foot‑8 forward/center from Santa Monica College, while Kevon Corley, the 2022 CIAA Rookie of the Year from Bowie State, adds backcourt depth.

Butler also welcomed guards Blake Bartney from Brunswick Community College and Ronald Bridges Jr. from Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, along with shooting guard TJ Williams from Bolingbrook High School. Together they form a diverse group that includes a developmental squad, a redshirt cohort, and the varsity lineup.

The coach’s vision extends beyond wins; he wants to revive the legacy of the C.E. Gaines Center, named for Clarence Big House Gaines, and reconnect with a fan base that has endured years of uncertainty.

Looking Forward

Butler described the first 90 days as the best of his life, expressing excitement about the program’s trajectory. With a strong recruiting pipeline and a commitment to community engagement, the Rams hope to restore the C.E. Gaines Center’s storied reputation and contend for postgraduate success.
