Jay McKee’s name still resonates in Buffalo hockey circles, not just for his eight seasons as a Sabres defenseman but for the way he has reinvented himself after hanging up his skates.
After a brief, under‑whelming pro career that began at 18, McKee spent a dozen years in the Ontario Hockey League, where he evolved from a raw prospect into a seasoned veteran, winning a championship with the Hamilton Bulldogs in 2021‑22 and guiding multiple teams to the playoffs.
His coaching trajectory took shape in 2011‑12 when he served as an assistant with the Rochester Americans, a stint that lasted only a season but opened the door to head‑coaching opportunities in the OHL, including stints with the Kitchener Rangers, Brantford Bulldogs, Barrie Colts, Dundas Real McCoys and the Erie Otters.
Now, the New York Islanders have tapped McKee to lead their AHL affiliate, the Hamilton Hammers, a move announced in May, signaling the organization’s confidence in his ability to develop talent and manage a professional roster.
Mentorship and Philosophy
McKee credits much of his coaching philosophy to Lindy Ruff, his mentor during his Sabres years, who introduced him to concepts like ‘Lindy One Touch’ and ‘Lindy 2B2’ that emphasize quick decision‑making and structured play.
Ruff’s influence extends beyond drills; he taught McKee the importance of a disciplined practice structure and a culture of accountability, lessons that have become cornerstones of McKee’s own coaching identity.
