The National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame announced that Jay Wright, the longtime architect of Villanova’s rise to a perennial powerhouse, will be part of its 2026 induction class.
Wright spent 21 seasons at the helm of the Wildcats, compiling a 642‑282 record and capturing NCAA championships in 2016 and 2018, while guiding the program to four Final Four appearances; his early years at Hofstra laid the groundwork for his later success.
His impact extended beyond the court; he is already enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, having been inducted in 2021, and is widely credited with transforming Villanova into a national brand.
A class of legends
The upcoming class also features Tubby Smith, the former Kentucky coach who led the Wildcats to an SEC championship, and Ted Owens, a Kansas legend whose tenure helped shape the program’s early identity.
Also joining the roster are Glen Rice, a Michigan star who earned three All‑American honors, Danny Ainge, the BYU standout who later became a longtime NBA executive, and Walt Hazzard, a UCLA champion whose contributions to the game are celebrated to this day.
Hall of Fame CEO Kevin Henderson praised the class, saying it represents the very best of college basketball and honors individuals whose achievements have left an indelible mark on the sport.
The induction ceremony is scheduled for October 22 in Kansas City, Missouri, where the honorees will be celebrated before an audience of fans, coaches, and basketball historians.
