Jaylen Lewis, a safety for Western Kentucky University, has been selected for the 2026 College Football Freaks List, a prestigious annual compilation that spotlights the nation’s most athletically gifted players. His 47th placement places him among just 101 athletes recognized for extraordinary feats such as vertical leap, speed and overall physical dominance.
Lewis’s journey to prominence began with a transfer from Temple, where he spent a single season before joining the Hilltoppers. At Temple he appeared in 11 games, starting six, and logged 43 tackles with two for loss and a forced fumble. Prior to that, he saw limited action at Arkansas, contributing three tackles over four appearances in the 2022‑2023 seasons.
In his sophomore year with WKU, Lewis started all 13 games and ranked tied for second on the team with 74 tackles. He added 3.5 tackles for loss and delivered a season‑high 15 tackles against LSU, including a sack. His impact was felt throughout Conference USA, where he averaged 5.69 tackles per game, positioning him 24th in the league for the 2025 campaign.
Beyond raw numbers, Lewis’s physical testing data set him apart from his peers. He recorded a 41‑inch vertical jump, a 1.53‑second 10‑yard split and a top speed of 22.9 mph, metrics that outperformed other WKU athletes in strength and agility assessments. These numbers helped secure his inclusion on multiple preseason watchlists, notably the 2027 Shriners Children’s 1000 Watchlist and the 2026 Athlon Sports Preseason All‑Conference USA First Team.
Preseason Honors and Upcoming Showdown
Lewis’s performance earned him CUSA Defensive Player of the Week after the opening win over Sam Houston, and he received All‑CUSA Honorable Mention recognition. His name now appears on several high‑profile preseason publications, underscoring expectations for a dominant 2026 season.
