Jazmin Gamble stepped onto the Hawthorne High School campus in March 2026 with a clear mission: to rewrite the narrative of a program that has not posted a winning record in over two decades.
A milestone in Hawthorne football
Her appointment marks only the second time a woman has led a varsity boys football team at the school, following the pioneering tenure of Knengi Martin in 2014.
Gamble’s own playing days were nothing short of spectacular. She starred as a running back and linebacker for the Los Angeles Legends, earning defensive MVP honors in 2024 and offensive MVP in 2025, a rare double that underscored her versatility and leadership.
Off the field, she runs The Jazz Standard, a fitness brand that blends performance training with confidence‑building workshops, and holds a certification as a personal trainer, experiences that inform her approach to player development.
Building confidence through fundamentals
Her coaching philosophy centers on meticulous preparation, fundamental mastery and the cultivation of self‑belief. “We focus on getting the details right, building confidence before the game, and letting that confidence translate into performance,” she says.
The Cougars’ nonleague slate this fall includes matches against Gardena, Compton Dominguez, West Torrance, Narbonne, Compton Centennial and Leuzinger before the Ocean League begins on October 2, a schedule designed to test the team early and fast.
With a foundation built on preparation and confidence, Gamble believes the program can return to the .500 mark and beyond, laying the groundwork for sustained athletic and personal growth.
