A Community in Mourning
On a Friday afternoon in late summer, a collision on U.S. Highway 550 near milepost 55 in southwestern Colorado claimed the life of Jeff Kiraly, 53, a revered baseball coach and former player.
Kiraly was riding his motorcycle when his bike struck that of an unidentified 73‑year‑old motorist from Texas. The impact threw him from his machine, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Life in Baseball
Before turning to coaching, Kiraly enjoyed a standout amateur career at La Cueva High School, where he earned all‑state honors, was named the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year in 1991, and later received a third‑round draft pick by the New York Mets.
He spent four seasons in the Mets’ minor‑league system before moving to independent leagues in Texas and Louisiana, where he honed his leadership skills that would later guide young athletes.
In 2017, his contributions to La Cueva’s baseball program were recognized with an induction into the school’s Hall of Fame, cementing his status as a local legend.
In 2019, Kiraly was appointed head coach of the Piedra Vista Panthers, and just months later he led the team to a Class 5A state baseball championship, a triumph that brought the community together in celebration.
The news of his death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from across New Mexico and beyond, with many highlighting his role as a mentor who shaped the lives of countless young athletes. As the community grapples with the loss, Kiraly’s legacy endures in the records, the friendships forged on the field, and the indelible mark he left on the sport.
