Jeff Lofton, a seasoned coach with more than twenty years of experience across Texas high school football, has officially been appointed head football coach at West Plains High School, taking over from Adam Cummings, who served as the program’s leader for four seasons.
Lofton’s résumé includes a nine‑year stint as both head football coach and athletic director at Idalou High School, where he compiled a 73‑33 record and guided the Wolves to a second consecutive unbeaten District 2‑4A Division I championship in 2025. Prior to that, he spent a decade at the same school, rising from assistant to associate head coach while also overseeing the powerlifting program.
A New Chapter for the Wolves
Before joining West Plains, Lofton was courted for a head coaching position at Brownfield in 2023, but he elected to remain in his current role, citing a commitment to the Wolves’ culture and community. His decision underscores a strategic continuity that district officials say will preserve the momentum built under Cummings’ tenure.
The school board and athletic department expressed confidence that Lofton’s blend of playing experience — he graduated from Idalou in 1997 — and administrative acumen will keep the program competitive as it prepares for the upcoming season. Community members and alumni alike have voiced enthusiasm, hoping the new leadership will sustain the winning tradition that has defined West Plains football in recent years.
Lance Lahnert, a longtime figure in the local sports scene, will continue to support the team in his capacity as a senior administrator, ensuring that the transition is smooth and that the program’s strategic goals remain aligned with the district’s broader vision.
