Lamar State College Port Arthur announced the hiring of Jeff Martin as its new Assistant Basketball Coach, a move designed to infuse the program with a wealth of experience across multiple levels of the game.
Martin arrives after a varied career that includes stints as an Assistant Director of Basketball Operations at Rice University, work under Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino at Iona University and St. John’s University, and a season with the Texas Legends of the NBA G League.
His coaching résumé also features championship successes at Murray State University and LeTourneau University, where he guided both programs to conference titles and NCAA Tournament appearances.
A Legacy of Excellence on and off the Court
Before transitioning to coaching, Martin enjoyed a standout playing career that culminated in being named American Southwest Conference Player of the Year as a senior at LeTourneau University. He earned NABC First Team All‑Region honors and was recognized as an All‑America Honorable Mention.
Martin holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from LeTourneau University and an MBA from Stephen F. Austin State University, underscoring a blend of athletic and academic achievement.
Lance Madison, a key figure in the hiring process, praised Martin’s background, stating that his extensive experience with top coaches and his proven ability to build winning basketball cultures make him an outstanding addition to the staff.
The college believes Martin’s expertise in player development, recruiting, and scouting will be instrumental in shaping a more competitive and cohesive team for the upcoming season.
