A New Chapter for Bearcats Flag Football
Binghamton University announced this week that Jeff Melesky will lead the institution’s first varsity women’s flag football team, set to debut in the 2027‑28 academic year. The appointment marks the university’s entry into a rapidly growing collegiate sport and aligns with its broader mission of integrating athletic competition with academic excellence.
Melesky arrives with a decorated coaching résumé that includes two NAIA championships and a period at Webber where his squads posted double‑digit win totals each season. Before joining Binghamton, he served as an assistant coach at Robinson High School in Tampa, Florida, guiding those teams to five state titles and coaching the Florida Gators club side to three national championships.
The Bearcats will compete in the ECAC and will be eligible for NCAA postseason play immediately, a rare advantage for a brand‑new program. University officials say the team will embody the school’s twin commitments to academic rigor and athletic achievement, aiming to elevate Binghamton’s profile by translating classroom successes into on‑field performance.
Melesky has said he is already scouting the next generation of talent, aiming to recruit athletes who can thrive both on the field and in the classroom. His vision includes raising Binghamton’s profile by translating classroom achievements into on‑field success and ultimately contending for a national championship.
In addition to building a competitive roster, the new program will partner with local high‑school coaches to spread knowledge of flag football and create a pipeline of talent throughout the region, reinforcing the university’s ties to the surrounding community.
