A New Era for Bearcats Flag Football
Binghamton University has tapped Jeff Melesky to lead its first-ever women's flag football program, a move that signals the school's ambition to expand its athletic footprint and compete at the national level. The appointment was celebrated by university officials who highlighted Melesky's extensive coaching pedigree and his proven ability to construct winning teams from the ground up.
Melesky arrives after six years at Webber International University, where he transformed a brand‑new NAIA program into a championship contender. Under his guidance the team posted a 10‑4 record in its inaugural season, captured two NAIA Championship victories, and earned co‑Coach of the Year honors. His success has been consistent, with each subsequent squad improving upon the last, culminating in a flawless 4‑0 run at the 2026 RCX Women's College Flag Finals.
Starting in spring 2028, the Bearcats will enter intercollegiate competition as members of the ECAC and will be immediately eligible for NCAA Championship play. University Athletic Director Leigh Ann Savidge‑Morris praised Melesky's track record, stating that his experience building competitive programs makes him the ideal architect for Binghamton's new flagship team.
The formal introduction of Melesky is scheduled for August 6 at the Events Center, where he will outline his vision, staffing plans, and the timeline for the program's debut. The press conference will also provide a platform for the university community to engage with the new coach and learn how the Bearcats intend to integrate flag football into the broader campus culture.
Melesky's coaching journey spans multiple institutions, including stints at the University of Florida, University of Tampa, and Virginia Tech. At Florida, he contributed to three consecutive women's club flag football national championships, while earlier roles at Robinson High School in Tampa honed his abilities across soccer, basketball, and cheerleading. He holds a bachelor's degree in communications studies from Virginia Tech, earned in 2002.
Beyond the X's and O's, Melesky expressed genuine excitement about the opportunity to shape a program that can rival the nation's best. He emphasized a commitment to building a culture of excellence, academic integrity, and community engagement, promising that the Bearcats will be competitive from day one and sustainable for years to come.
