Bellarmine University announced this week that Jeff Rutter has been hired as an assistant coach for the men's basketball team, marking the latest chapter in a career that has spanned more than three dozen seasons of collegiate competition.
A career built on continuity and growth
Rutter's journey began as a graduate assistant at North Dakota State, where he quickly moved into a full‑time role. From there he guided Western Michigan for four seasons, helping the Broncos secure back‑to‑back Mid‑American Conference Tournament appearances and laying the groundwork for future successes.
His next stop was the University of Northern Iowa, where he contributed to three consecutive NCAA Tournament bids. At Iowa State, he spent seven years shaping a program that earned two NCAA Tournament selections, and he later served as interim head coach at Drake, steering the Bulldogs to a five‑game winning streak during the 2016‑17 season.
Recent years at Miami and beyond
In 2017 Rutter joined Miami University (Ohio), where his leadership helped the RedHawks compile 70 victories and earn a berth in the College Basketball Invitational. Throughout his tenure at each institution he has coached numerous All‑Conference selections and Academic All‑MAC honorees, underscoring his commitment to both athletic and scholarly achievement.
Beyond the X's and O's, Rutter is a family man. He and his wife Shari are parents to a son, AJ, and grandparents to a granddaughter, Brooke. Their personal story reflects the same balance of dedication and community that Rutter brings to the basketball court.
Looking ahead
With a résumé that includes stops at Bellarmine's future opponents such as Western Michigan, North Dakota State, Stetson, University of Wisconsin‑Parkside, University of Northern Iowa, Iowa State, Drake and Miami University, Rutter arrives at Bellarmine equipped with a deep network of relationships and a reputation for fostering player development. His appointment signals the program's intent to blend tradition with fresh strategic insight as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
