TCU’s men’s basketball program announced a significant addition to its coaching staff this week, as veteran assistant Jerry Hobbie was named the new assistant coach under head coach Jamie Dixon.
Hobbie, who arrives after a 29‑year odyssey across several high‑profile programs, brings a reputation as a shooting specialist and a track record of turning raw talent into polished prospects.
A Strategic Addition
His career includes stints at Washington, where he helped the Huskies capture the 2019 Pac‑12 Championship and boosted the team’s free‑throw accuracy from 68.2 % to 76.4 %, as well as seven seasons at Southern Methodist University that produced three NCAA Tournament appearances.
At Washington he also guided the development of four NBA draft picks — Jaden McDaniels, Jaylen Nowell, Isaiah Stewart and Matisse Thybulle — showcasing his ability to nurture talent that transitions to the professional ranks.
Prior to that, his seven‑year tenure at SMU yielded a similar impact, producing NBA draftees Sterling Brown, Shake Milton and Semi Ojeleye while the Mustangs earned back‑to‑back winning seasons.
Dixon, who has led the Horned Frogs to multiple postseason appearances, said the hire aligns with his vision of elevating the team’s offensive efficiency, noting that Hobbie’s emphasis on shooting mechanics dovetails with the program’s long‑term goals.
The move also underscores TCU’s commitment to building a coaching cadre that blends proven collegiate success with a developmental mindset, a strategy that could pay dividends in the increasingly competitive landscape of Division I basketball.
