SUNY Brockport announced this week that Jessica Christenson will take the helm of its women's soccer program as the new head coach, replacing longtime leader Mike Idland.
Christenson arrives with a résumé that blends high‑level playing experience with a decade of coaching success at both the collegiate and youth levels.
Before joining Brockport, she spent nine years at Keuka College, guiding the Express to 42 victories and capturing the NEAC regular‑season title in 2018, a run that produced 13 All‑Conference honorees, including the 2018 Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.
Her tenure at the University of Rochester followed, where she served as an assistant coach for the Yellowjackets, further sharpening her tactical acumen and recruiting reach.
Christenson’s playing days were equally distinguished; she was a four‑year letterwinner and two‑year captain for the University of Connecticut Huskies, leading the team to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2009 and 2010 and earning Big East Academic All‑Star honors twice.
Professionally, she contributed to the Portland Thorns’ inaugural 2013 NWSL Championship squad and also played abroad in Sweden with Mallbackens IF and in France with Yzeure Allier, experiences that broadened her tactical perspective.
Beyond the pitch, Christenson has been an active figure in the regional soccer community through her role with the RNYFC Soccer Club in Rochester, where she has coached youth teams across the U‑12, U‑16, U‑17 and U‑18 age groups, building a network that will aid in recruiting for Brockport.
Her academic credentials — a bachelor’s degree in sports management from UConn and a master’s in coaching and athletics administration from Concordia University Irvine — reflect a commitment to integrating scholarly achievement with athletic ambition.

In her introductory remarks, Christenson emphasized that her coaching philosophy mirrors the university’s focus on academic excellence, community involvement and sustained competitive success.
She noted that the program’s recent achievements, including multiple Empire 8 Championship game appearances and NCAA Tournament berths, provide a strong foundation upon which she hopes to build.
The hiring also marks a transition from Mike Idland, who departed after a decade to assume a similar role at Buffalo State, leaving a legacy of 41‑7‑11 record and numerous conference titles.
Christenson’s appointment is expected to continue the Golden Eagles’ ascent in Division III soccer while reinforcing the institution’s broader mission of developing student‑athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom.
