Jim Childs is set to become the new play‑by‑play announcer for Moorhead Spuds football beginning with the 2026 season, taking over from the legendary Larry Knutson whose voice has defined Spuds broadcasts for decades.
A Legacy Replaced
Childs arrives with more than twelve years of broadcasting experience, having worked alongside Knutson during the Minnesota boys hockey state tournaments and contributed to QCTV in the Twin Cities as well as the streaming platform NSPN.
He will be joined by analyst Chad Mattson, a former Spuds player who helped the team capture the 1987 state championship and who grew up listening to Knutson’s iconic calls on Friday nights.
Community Roots
Childs expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity, noting that the Spuds community has been a constant presence in his life and that he feels honored to continue the tradition Knutson built over many years.
Mattson reflected on his own childhood memories of Moorhead, recalling how Knutson’s voice became the soundtrack of his youth and how the new partnership feels like a natural passing of the torch.
