Jim Lindsey, a former NCAA and NFL champion running back, passed away at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy that spanned college glory, professional triumphs, and a surprising turn toward business and public service.
At the University of Arkansas, Lindsey was a cornerstone of the Razorbacks squad that captured the 1964 national championship. His contributions helped cement the program’s reputation during a pivotal era, and his name remains synonymous with that historic season.
The Minnesota Vikings selected Lindsey in the second round of the 1966 NFL Draft, and he spent his entire eight‑year career with the club. He was a key special‑teams captain in 1968 and contributed 566 rushing yards, 632 receiving yards and four touchdowns, culminating in the franchise’s first NFL championship in 1969.
After hanging up his cleats, Lindsey turned to real estate development, founding a company that grew to manage thousands of apartment units and more than three dozen golf courses across several states. His entrepreneurial spirit earned him a place in the Arkansas Business Hall of Fame in 2010.
Lindsey’s public service ambitions surfaced in 1976 when he ran for governor of Arkansas, though he was defeated in the primary by incumbent David Pryor. The campaign highlighted his willingness to engage in politics, a path he pursued alongside a partnership with fellow Arkansas sports icon Jerry Jones on the Jerry Jones/Jim Lindsey Hall of Champions at the Broyles Athletic Complex.
Inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Honor in 1987, Lindsey’s story illustrates how athletic excellence can translate into diverse achievements, from championship fields to boardrooms and community initiatives.
