From Player to Coach: A 35‑Year Journey
At North Carolina State University, Toman played as a catcher and team captain during his junior and senior seasons, guiding the Wolfpack to winning campaigns each year. After graduation, he began his coaching career at Richmond County High School, where he also oversaw wrestling and football before moving to Florida International University for a single season.
Returning to his alma mater, he spent seven years as an assistant under Ray Tanner at the University of South Carolina, rising to associate head coach. During that tenure, he helped shape three top‑ranked recruiting classes in 2003, 2005 and 2006, earning National Assistant Coach of the Year honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association and Baseball America in 2002.
In 2008, Toman took the helm at Liberty University, steering the program for nine seasons. He later served as an assistant at the College of Charleston and, most recently, as head coach at Middle Tennessee State University from 2018 to 2022, accumulating more than 400 career wins across his storied path.
Beyond the win column, Toman’s legacy is defined by the lives he touched. Colleagues such as Ray Tanner praised his ability to blend technical instruction with personal growth, noting that his influence extended far beyond the dugout. His family has requested donations to the National Brain Tumor Society in lieu of flowers, underscoring the cause that claimed his life.
