A Legacy That Endures
The college baseball world mourns the loss of Jim Toman, a revered coach who passed away on August 4 at the age of 64 after a courageous fight against glioblastoma. In lieu of flowers, his family asked that donations be made to the National Brain Tumor Society, underscoring the cause that defined his final chapter.
Over three and a half decades, Toman built a distinguished coaching résumé that spanned stints at North Carolina State, the University of South Carolina, Liberty University and Middle Tennessee State University, where he amassed more than 400 career wins.
Born and raised in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, he excelled on the diamond and the gridiron at his high school, captaining both baseball and football teams before moving on to play catcher at North Carolina State University, where his senior and junior seasons culminated in team winning records.
After graduation, Toman launched his coaching career at Richmond County High School in North Carolina, juggling responsibilities as baseball coach, head wrestling coach and assistant football coach before advancing to Florida International University and later returning to Raleigh as an assistant under Ray Tanner.
His tenure at South Carolina lasted 11 seasons, during which he recruited three top‑ranked classes in 2003, 2005 and 2006, each earning the nation’s No. 1 ranking, and earned him the National Assistant Coach of the Year honor from the American Baseball Coaches Association and Baseball America in 2002.
In 2008 he took the helm at Liberty University, guiding the program for nine seasons, and later served as head coach at Middle Tennessee State University from 2018 through 2022, leaving behind a legacy of player development and program building.
Beyond the win column, Toman was celebrated for his mentorship, his unwavering dedication to his family, and his passion for the game that inspired countless players and colleagues.
