Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje Commits to Duke, Boosting Blue Devils' Frontcourt
Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje, the Barcelona-born forward who has been a standout in the club’s youth ranks, announced his commitment to Duke University on Wednesday, choosing the Blue Devils over a handful of elite programs.
His decision comes after a breakout performance at the U17 FIBA World Cup, where he helped Team USA capture the gold medal and earned the tournament’s MVP award.
During the competition he averaged 19.6 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.1 blocks and 1.7 steals per game, shooting 59.8% from the floor, 53.1% from three‑point range and 88% from the free‑throw line.
Analysts who had previously ranked him as the No. 1 pick in the 2028 NBA Draft now see his stock soar, noting that his combination of size, shooting efficiency and defensive versatility is rare at his age.
Because of NBA age rules, Boumtje Boumtje will have to spend at least two seasons at Duke before he becomes eligible for the draft, giving coach Jon Scheyer a chance to develop him alongside a veteran‑laden roster.
The buzz surrounding his arrival is already palpable; analysts expect him to become a household name in college basketball and a cornerstone for Duke’s push back to the top of the national rankings.
