Joel Ward, a former NHL forward and co‑founder of the Hockey Diversity Alliance, has been appointed head coach of the Henderson Silver Knights, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Vegas Golden Knights.
Ward’s appointment marks a personal milestone and a broader push for representation, as he aims to become only the second Black head coach in NHL history, following the pioneering Dirk Graham.
The move also underscores the influence of the Hockey Diversity Alliance, the organization Ward helped launch to champion inclusivity across the sport, a cause he has championed since his playing days.
Ward’s journey to the bench began as an undrafted free agent who broke into the league with the Minnesota Wild, endured 11 NHL seasons, and reached the 2016 Stanley Cup Final with the San Jose Sharks.
His coaching résumé includes stints under respected mentors such as Barry Trotz and Peter DeBoer, as well as experience with other NHL programs that have shaped his tactical outlook.
