A Legacy That Transcends the Diamond
John Anderson, who guided the University of Minnesota baseball program for almost five decades, died on Tuesday at the age of 71.
A native of the Midwest, Anderson arrived in Minneapolis in 1981 at just 26, becoming the youngest head coach in Big Ten history.
During his tenure he amassed a career record of 1,390‑1,021‑3, the most wins in conference history and the 20th‑most among all Division I coaches.
His teams appeared in 19 NCAA Tournaments, captured numerous Big Ten titles and, in 2018, broke new ground by reaching the program’s first NCAA Super Regional.
The university retired his jersey number 14 in 2024, a tribute to a man known simply as “14” by players and fans alike.
Anderson is survived by his wife, Jan, and their daughter, Erin, who said the family had chosen to donate his organs through the university’s transplant program.
Tributes have poured in from former players, colleagues and rivals, who remember him not only for his wins but for the culture of discipline and community he built.
