John Anderson, who spent nearly five decades shaping the University of Minnesota’s baseball program, died on July 26 at the age of 71.
Over his 49‑year career he compiled a 1,390‑1,021‑3 record, guiding the Gophers to 38 winning seasons and 19 NCAA postseason appearances, a span that placed him first in Big Ten history for wins and among the top 20 coaches nationwide.
Anderson’s impact was recognized repeatedly, earning Big Ten Coach of the Year eight times — starting with his debut in 1982 and culminating in 2018 — and helping the team finish first or second in conference standings on 24 occasions.
Celebration of Life
A public celebration of life will be held on Monday, August 10 at the university’s Maturi Pavilion, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to wear maroon or gold, and seating will be available on the south side of the pavilion.
The ceremony will feature remarks from former players, colleagues and university leaders, honoring a legacy that extended beyond the diamond, including the retirement of his No 14 jersey and the influence he exerted on more than two dozen athletes who reached Major League Baseball.
