John Anderson to Receive 2027 Lefty Gomez Award
John Anderson, the longtime University of Minnesota baseball coach, has been selected to receive the 2027 American Baseball Coaches Association’s Wilson Lefty Gomez Award, a honor that recognizes individuals whose impact on the sport extends far beyond the diamond.
The award, named for Hall of Fame pitcher Charles “Lefty” Gomez, will be presented at the ABCA Hall of Fame Banquet in Chicago on January 8, 2027, bringing together some of the most influential figures in college baseball.
A Legacy of Championships
Anderson spent four decades at the helm of Gopher baseball, compiling a career record of 1,390‑1,021‑3 that places him 20th all‑time among Division I coaches in wins.
His teams captured eleven Big Ten regular‑season titles and ten conference tournament championships, while guiding Minnesota to nineteen NCAA postseason appearances, highlighted by the historic 2018 run that saw the Gophers advance to the College World Series.
A native of the Midwest, Anderson was named Big Ten Coach of the Year eight times and earned ABCA Mideast Region Coach of the Year honors in 2004, 2010 and 2018. He was inducted into the ABCA Hall of Fame in 2008 and the university’s “M” Club Hall of Fame in 2002.
Reflecting on his journey, Anderson recalled being appointed the 13th head coach in Gopher history in 1981 at the age of 26, making him the youngest head coach ever in Big Ten baseball at the time.
The upcoming ceremony will not only celebrate Anderson’s achievements but also underscore the enduring partnership between the American Baseball Coaches Association and Wilson, the award’s sponsor.
