John Brady, a Louisiana Sports Hall of Famer and former head coach of the LSU Tigers, has been named Senior Advisor for Athletic Advancement and Men’s Basketball Strategy at LSU New Orleans, a move that signals a strategic push to bolster the program’s future.
Brady’s 19‑year tenure at LSU produced 192 victories, two SEC championships, and a Final Four appearance in 2006, earning him SEC Coach of the Year honors in 2000 and 2006 and a place among the school’s all‑time winningest coaches.
A Legacy of Development and Fundraising
During his time at LSU, Brady mentored SEC Player of the Year talents such as Stromile Swift, Glen Davis and Brandon Bass, while also guiding teams to NCAA Tournament berths in 2000, 2003, 2005 and 2006. His success extended beyond Baton Rouge, with stints at Samford and Arkansas State that saw him accumulate 89 and 121 wins respectively, and a decade‑long role as a color analyst for the LSU Sports Radio Network that kept him closely connected to the fan base.
The appointment, announced at a press conference on October 31, 2023, at Lakefront Arena, will see Brady leverage his extensive network to drive fundraising across basketball and the broader athletic department, while also shaping program strategy and player development initiatives.
Dr. Michael Giorlando, Stacy Hollowell and Tim Floyd, among other university leaders, will work alongside Brady to integrate his vision into LSU New Orleans’ growth plan, a collaboration that reflects the institution’s commitment to elevating its athletic profile.
Ervin Johnson, a fellow Louisiana Sports Hall of Famer, praised Brady’s return as a “homecoming that will inspire current student‑athletes and reinforce the university’s basketball heritage.”
