A Veteran Voice Returns to the Front Office
The Buffalo Sabres announced this week that John Davidson will step into the role of senior advisor, bringing a wealth of experience from a career that spans playing, broadcasting, and executive leadership in the NHL.
Davidson, a Hall of Fame inductee who earned the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award in 2009, enjoyed a ten‑year playing stint with the St. Louis Blues and the New York Rangers before transitioning to a broadcasting career that made him a familiar voice to fans across North America.
His executive journey began in earnest when he helped usher Jarmo Kekalainen into the Columbus Blue Jackets organization in 2013, a move that made Kekalainen the league’s first European‑born general manager.
Over the next decade, Davidson and Kekalainen forged a partnership that produced four playoff appearances for the Blue Jackets and a franchise‑record 108 points in the 2016‑17 season, before Davidson briefly served as interim general manager during the 2023‑24 campaign.
Most recently, Davidson spent the 2024‑25 season as a senior advisor for the Blue Jackets, a role that allowed him to mentor younger executives while maintaining his connections across the league.
The Sabres’ general manager, Jarmo Kekalainen, praised Davidson’s blend of on‑ice insight and front‑office acumen, noting that the hire represents the third major front‑office addition under his leadership.
Alongside the front‑office reshuffle, the Sabres completed a trade with the Washington Capitals that saw minor‑league forward Zac Funk arrive in Buffalo in exchange for forward Tyler Kopff, a move designed to add depth to the organization’s developmental pipeline.
