John Jay Wolves Kick Off Fall Practice in New Developmental League

Senior standouts Kyle Halsey and James Tesi aim to revitalize the program as the team opens against Goshen on Sept. 3

The John Jay High School football team opened fall practice on August 17, marking the start of a new developmental league designed to lift the program after a solitary victory the previous season. With only one win to show for the prior year, the coaching staff has turned to a structured developmental environment to accelerate growth and instill a winning culture.

A Fresh Start for the Wolves

Seniors Kyle Halsey, a stalwart on the offensive line and linebacker, and junior receiver James Tesi, who set a school record for receptions last year, return as the core of a 35‑player varsity roster that blends seniors, juniors and sophomores. Their enthusiasm is palpable; Halsey calls football his favorite time of year, while Tesi is eager to help turn the program around and compete against traditional rivals such as Somers and Yorktown.

Coach Brendan Connolly emphasizes that the seniors are laying the foundation for future success by setting standards for teamwork, discipline and daily improvement. He notes that the folded junior varsity squad last fall was a wake‑up call, prompting the move to the new league to rebuild depth and experience across the board.

The Wolves will open the season on the road against Goshen in Section 9 on September 3. The matchup against a Class A powerhouse will serve as the first test of the new developmental approach, and the team is focused on incremental progress rather than immediate results.
