A New Chapter for the Minutemen
John McNelis, a 5‑10 left‑shot forward weighing 165 pounds, has officially joined the University of Massachusetts hockey program for the 2026‑27 season. His blend of speed and offensive instincts made him a coveted transfer from Boston University, where he honed his craft over the past year.
McNelis arrives after a three‑year stint in the United States Hockey League, where he accumulated 84 points — 38 goals and 46 assists — across 124 games. The Minutemen coaching staff praised his work ethic and ability to create scoring chances, noting that his experience in high‑pressure environments will be a valuable asset.
Beyond club play, the forward has represented the United States on the international stage, capturing gold at the 2024 World Junior A Challenge and bronze at the 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. He was also recognized with a spot on the USHL All‑Rookie Second Team during the 2023‑24 campaign.
Impact on the Program
Coach Greg Carvel expressed enthusiasm about the addition, stating that McNelis brings a competitive edge that aligns with the program’s ambitions. “We’re excited to welcome a player of John’s caliber,” Carvel said. “His experience and skill set will help elevate our offensive production and deepen our roster depth as we aim for a strong season.”
The Minutemen’s roster now features a mix of seasoned veterans and fresh talent, positioning the team for a competitive run in the Hockey East conference. Fans can look forward to seeing how McNelis integrates into the lineup during the upcoming preseason exhibitions.
