A Season of Excellence
Johnathon Stunkel, a senior at Putnam County High School, has been crowned the 2026 NewsTribune Baseball Player of the Year, a distinction that highlights his standout performance during a season that saw his team finish as Class 1A runners‑up.
On the mound he compiled a 9‑3 record with 107 strikeouts, while at the plate he led the area with seven home runs and five triples, finishing the postseason 11‑for‑23 with two homers, a triple, four doubles, seven RBIs and eight runs scored.
Postseason Impact
His dual impact was evident in the postseason run: he earned the win in the regional title game, the sectional semifinal and the sectional championship, and he tossed 6 ⅔ innings in the state semifinal, helping his team secure a 4‑3 victory.
Award Accolades and Historical Context
The accolades extended beyond statistics; he was selected to the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 1A First‑Team All‑State and earned First‑Team All‑Tri‑County Conference honors, marking the eighth Putnam County player to receive the award since its inception in 1997.
Stunkel will continue his baseball career as a two‑way player at Illinois Central College, where he hopes to build on the momentum of a season that combined personal brilliance with team perseverance.
The recognition places his achievement among a select group of Illinois high school talents who have leveraged high school success into collegiate opportunities, underscoring the continued strength of baseball in Putnam County.
