Johnny Dawkins, the former Duke standout who has been guiding the UCF Knights as head coach, announced that his contract has been renewed through the 2028‑29 season, a move that underscores the university’s confidence in his vision. He took the opportunity to thank UCF President Alexander N. Cartwright and Vice President Terry Mohajir for their steadfast support.
A New Era for UCF Basketball
During his tenth year at UCF, the team posted a 21‑12 overall record, marking the second straight season with at least 20 wins and earning an at‑large berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Knights finished 9‑9 in Big 12 play, their best conference showing since entering the league in 2023, and climbed as high as No. 25 in the AP Top 25 poll.
The season included a memorable exhibition against Duke, where Dawkins’ squad trailed by only one at halftime before falling 96‑71 to a team coached by Jon Scheyer. The matchup highlighted the lingering connections between the two programs and added a narrative layer to Dawkins’ own Duke legacy.
Dawkins ends his UCF tenure with a 189‑132 record, while his overall head‑coaching career stands at 345‑247. As a player, he once held the record for Duke’s all‑time leading scorer with 2,556 points, a mark later eclipsed by JJ Redick, though Dawkins remains the school’s second‑leading scorer in history.
Reflecting on the program’s trajectory, Dawkins expressed pride in the progress made and emphasized his commitment to continue building a competitive team that can contend for championships. His statement was delivered with gratitude toward the university leadership that has supported his ascent.
