Jonathan Braund, a longtime assistant coach at New Albany High School, has been appointed head coach after Mike Sandman’s resignation. The move follows Sandman’s decision to step down in order to become dean of students at Utica Middle School, ending a four‑year tenure that produced an 80‑38 record and a Division II state championship in 2023.
A Legacy of Success
Under Sandman, the Eagles captured the 2023 OHSAA Division II state final, defeating Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit 4‑1 at Akron’s Credit Union Park. The victory capped a stretch of consistent excellence that saw the program finish with an 80‑38 overall record during his four seasons.
Braund’s ascent has been steady. He joined the New Albany staff in 2013 as a volunteer assistant, later guiding freshman and junior varsity squads before earning a promotion to varsity assistant over the past two seasons. His coaching journey has been shaped by mentorship under Dave Starling, the architect of New Albany’s 2021 Division I state title.
Defending the Title
Now at the program’s helm, Braund is focused on preserving the momentum of the past two seasons. He cites a strong team culture and the experience of returning players as foundations for another deep run. Pitcher Bryson Gittins, a Denison commit, has praised Braund’s intimate knowledge of the program and his ability to build on existing strengths.
Braund, a 2005 graduate of Dublin Scioto, also teaches wellness at New Albany Intermediate School, balancing his classroom duties with the demands of leading the baseball team through a championship‑defending campaign.
