Jordan Smith, a two‑time All‑American pitcher from St. Cloud State, arrived in Fort Myers in 2026 after stints managing in Lynchburg, North Carolina, Arizona and the Dominican Winter League. Drafted ninth overall by the Cleveland Indians in 2011, he now oversees the Twins’ Single‑A affiliate, the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels, with a focus on speed, player development and clear expectations.
A Season of Growth
Under Smith’s leadership the Mussels posted a 63‑52 record, placing second in the Florida State League West behind the Tampa Tarpons and Clearwater Threshers. The club leads the league in stolen bases, driven by outfielder Merphy Hernandez’s 42 swipes, and five of the Twins’ top 30 prospects, including catchers Vahn Lackey and Carson Tinney, are on the roster.
Smith emphasizes a coaching staff that blends experience with fresh ideas, setting firm expectations for each player while allowing freedom to exploit speed and contact skills. He believes that development is a partnership between pitcher, catcher and coaching, and that the organization’s player‑development philosophy is best served by giving prospects regular at‑bats and the chance to learn on the field.
The Smith family has put down roots in southwest Florida for the summer, enjoying the beaches and the travel that comes with a full season. Wife Ashley Smith, a second‑grade teacher, and their children Talon and Laney have embraced the local lifestyle, while Jordan balances his managerial duties with weekend trips to the ballpark.
When the regular season wraps up on September 6, the family will head back to Willmar, Minnesota. Ashley will return to the classroom, and Jordan plans to continue his work with the Driven Baseball Academy, a venture he helped build during his off‑season.
Looking ahead, Smith says the goal is to keep the Mussels competitive, nurture the next wave of Twins talent and maintain the strong community ties that have made the franchise a staple of the region.
