Jordan Tapley Takes the Helm as Smithsburg High School Baseball Coach

Former player and assistant coach embraces a new leadership role, promising resilience and community growth

A Fresh Leadership Chapter

Jordan Tapley, a 2016 alumnus of Smithsburg High School and a key member of the 2014 state‑title team, has been named the new head baseball coach for the Leopards. His appointment follows the retirement of Patrick Moore, who guided the program to two region championships in his final two seasons.

Tapley’s baseball journey began on the sandlots of Funkstown Legion, where he pitched the 2015 state championship game, and continued at Hagerstown Community College before returning to Smithsburg as an assistant coach. He also served a year away from the diamond after undergoing Tommy John surgery at age fifteen, an experience that later shaped his perspective on perseverance.

Speaking about his philosophy, Tapley credits Greg Eversole for teaching him that the game is never bigger than one moment, a lesson he now hopes to pass on. He believes baseball is a vehicle for teaching resilience and shaping better men and leaders, and he intends to embed those values into every practice and game.

The transition comes with high expectations. Moore’s recent region titles set a benchmark, and Tapley acknowledges the challenge of maintaining that standard while fostering a culture of community involvement and personal growth. He emphasizes that the program’s success will be measured not only by wins but by the character of its players.

Fans and parents alike are eager to see how Tapley will blend his playing experience, coaching mentorship, and community focus into a cohesive strategy. As the new head coach, he will look to build on the program’s recent momentum and guide the Leopards toward another era of excellence.
